Ocean and atmosphere connections ... The study of the oceans is intimately linked to understanding global warming and related biosphere concerns. The atmosphere and ocean are linked because of evaporation and precipitation as well as thermal flux (and solar insolation). Wind stress is a major driver of ocean currents while the ocean is a sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide.

AfterwordThe term frontiersman is perhaps the most adequate descriptive word that can be applied to Kit Carson. Each of his successive careers -- beaver trapper and mountain man, scout and guide for government expeditions, Indian agent, and army officer -- was built to a considerable extent upon the careers that preceded it, and all were on the advancing edge of the American frontier. Beginning as an illiterate runaway, he ended as a brigadier general and achieved the status of national hero in the process. An analysis of his vari- ous careers shows how this was accomplished.
First of all, as a mountain man, contrary to popular belief, he was never a leader. Most of the leaders were good traders, but Kit was not much interested in, or very good at, that aspect of the fur business. To him trapping was a free and adventurous life, hard but enjoyable, and he looked back on it with nostalgia to the end of his days. In pursuing it, he became more knowledgeable about Indi- ans, both peaceable and hostile, than most ordinary trappers. He was already a widely traveled veteran trapper before he came to the rendezvous country but, although he mastered the craft, the Fort Hall account books reveal that many trappers were more suc- cessful than he. Kit was a fairly typical mountain man, although with a some-what higher standard of conduct than many of the rank and file of which he was a member. He was content with his comfortable Indian marriage.
