The Santa Fe Trail was a historic 19th century transportation route through southwestern North America connecting Missouri with Santa Fe, New Mexico. First used in 1821 by William Becknell, it served as a vital commercial and military highway until the introduction of the railroad to Santa Fe in 1880. At first an international trade route between the United States and Mexico, it served as the 1846 U.S. invasion route of New Mexico during the Mexican-American War.

 

Cimarron Route

The other main branch cut southwest to the valley of the Cimarron River near the town of Ulysses and Elkhart then continued toward Boise City, Oklahoma, to Clayton, New Mexico, joining up with northern branch at Fort Union. From Watrous, the reunited branches continued southward to Santa Fe.

 

This shorter "cutoff" was generally very hazardous because it had very little water. In fact, the Cimarron River was one of the only sources of water along this branch of the trail. Many people died because of the lack of water. Part of this route has been designated a National Scenic Byway.

One of the newest additions to the always-increasing offerings from Google is steerable panoramic images shot along the streets of American cities, including Lawrence.

 

They call this new feature Google Street View. It can be a little frightening from a privacy standpoint to know that anyone, anywhere can zoom right into your front doorstep online. Regardless, the technology is here to stay, and we can only expect more features that attempt to “upload” the tangible, physical world onto the Internet

because my (Midland, MI-USA) Scouts got me involved in “living history.”

Hornbuckle Reports: Riches Beyond Imagination     The Convention registration packet arrived! In a frenzy we signed up for three convention tours. One, the Carson River Route, would be an ancestral connection.   My g-g-g-grandfather, Lewis Ralston, traced the Carson River in 1850. Ralston along with several Cherokee relatives left Georgia and joined a larger train in Oklahoma on their way to the gold fields. On the way west while passing through the Denver area, Ralston found the first gold in Colorado on June 22, 1850. The find appeared to be small and the train continued on to California. Interestingly, a major strike was made in the Ralston Creek area eight years later.   Two Carson River tours were scheduled; ours was the "high-clearance" event. Leaving Chico we crossed Donner Pass for the first time. At the summit, looking down on Donner Lake, we stood in awe at the emigrant's ability to conquer that mountain! The freeway led us on to our rendezvous north of Fallon, Nevada.   After signing the releases, we hurried to a low rise between the Humboldt and Carson Sinks. For the next two days we chased yesteryear travelers on their march to riches that would soon be theirs.   Led by Dick Brock, Jim Carman and Ed Otto, we attacked the sage lined trail as it crossed the Forty Mile Desert. Considering the potential for dust, the conditions were quite pleasant. The desert, dry now as it was in the mid-1800s, was once covered by the 8400 square mile Lake Lahontan. Nearing Carson City we explored the remains of Fort Churchill established in 1860 and abandoned in 1869. Today only scattered adobe walls provide a sign of early settlers fears of hostilities. During the 1930s the local DAR chapter took interest in the site and the CCC constructed a visitor center at the fort.   Onward we pressed, stopping briefly at Ragtown. It was not actually a town but a spot along the trail where emigrants hung wet clothes on sage brush to dry. Several diaries noted the spectacle as, "looking like a rag town!"   The next morning we left Carson City, passing through Genoa and around the south end of Lake Tahoe. The Genoa Historical Society opened their museum for our group. The museum would be a credit to any community. And we found a great ice cream parlor.   Ahead lay the Sierras and Carson Pass at 8574 feet above sea level. Nearing the summit we hiked a short portion of the trail and viewed an axle grease inscription "Rogers, Aug 28th '49" and found rocks worn smooth by passing wagon wheels. We arrived at the summit of the Sierras where California bound emigrants faced Devil's Ladder, the final great obstacle of the Sierras.   On the west side we stopped at two springs, Tragedy and Leek. Tragedy Springs was the site where three members of the eastbound Mormon Battalion were ambushed by Indians in the summer of 1848 and where a westbound emigrant died in 1850. Leek Springs gained its name from the native leek plants that grew there.   We had conquered the Forty Mile Desert and the Sierras! Gold was their riches; renewal of old acquaintances and meeting new friends was our riches. On to Kansas City. The ability of our diverse group to work together is the outstanding attribute of our chapter. We may not agree on all matters, but we are able to find ways to work together while respecting the views of others. Our trail marking work in the Pendleton area has been outstanding.   The Northwest Chapter has also been a great source of volunteers for OCTA activities above the chapter level. In fact, so many are involved that some suspect a Northwest plot to take over OCTA. I have tried to assure them that we have no "Northwest Agenda," but those attracted by conspiracy theories are not believers. Currently, Northwest Chapter members serving OCTA at the national level include (in addition to myself), Gail Carbiener (treasurer), Dick Ackerman (preservation officer), and Vic Bolon, Don Popejoy and Bob Kabel (directors). I know that each is dedicated to the success of OCTA on a national basis.   Thanks to all of you who have helped me in the past. I enjoy my work for OCTA and am looking forward improving trail preservation and increasing OCTA's national presence. Please feel free to contact me at any time. Don Popejoy   Trivia Item   You have probably heard about the Tate Watch Company of Massachusetts, who made durable watches in the mid 1840s. They sold them to emigrants heading west with the novelty of having a compass on the backside of the watch.   Unfortunately, the compass was terribly inaccurate, causing several wagon trains to end up in God-forsaken lands like California or Washington Territory rather than the Eden of Oregon. One thing is clear to me: American history does not start with the "discovery" of America in 1492. People native to the Americas have always wandered and explored. And older Mediterranian cultures such as the Phoenicians sailed and traded worldwide.

 

The Romans who subsequently conquered the Mediterranian and Europe were not the sea-going explorers of earlier cultures. The secrets of the sea were lost. It wasn't until after the dark ages that exploration by sea re-emerged. And as for wanderers?

 

To say that Europeans, Africans, and Asians were not in North America before the birth of Christ is, in my opinion, naive.

TUCSON, Arizona — It took a 1,300-mile march for the Mormon Battalion to finally see hostile action in southern Arizona during the Mexican-American War in 1846. But the enemy was not what the soldiers expected—they were attacked by a group of enraged bulls near the San Pedro River. Church leader Brigham Young encouraged Latter-day Saint men to join the United States Army in order to raise money to help finance the Saints' westward migration.
